Thomas Bewick (1753-1828),the son of a Northumberland farmer, was born at Cherryburn House near Eltringham on the banks of the Tyne over two hundred years ago.

At 14 he was apprenticed to the Newcastle engraver Ralph Beilby and subsequently developed his own school of engravers, publishing several important books during his lifetime.

He rejected copper engraving in favour of the more direct and sympathetic qualities of wood, carving in the end grain.

Admired by Charlotte Bronte, Carlyle and Ruskin, he died in 1828 aged 75 and was buried in Ovinghma churchyard across the river from Cherryburn House. Today he is recognized as England's finest wood engraver.
