The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in 1908 as a branch of the British Royal Mint. It strikes many special edition coins and Maple Leaf bullion investment coins. The mint also processes about 70 percent of the country’s gold in its refinery, which is among the largest in North American. The building was refurbished fully in the 1980′s and now offers guided tours. They are available daily, but coinage fanatics must make reservations in advance to see the process that turns sheets of metal into bags of shiny gold coins.
